i hate perfume.
if 5 years ago you would have told me that one day i would give two blips about perfume i would have called you nuts. however, for the past 3 years i've been a loyal burberry user {both brit and london} and this summer i'm all about tom ford's black orchid. when i wear perfumes now that i started wearing years ago, it brings back strong memories of that time period. scent and memory are intensely connected, and that's one of the things that perfumer christopher brosius of i hate perfume, evokes with his own scents; the experience of a certain place and time. with descriptions like "the salty breath of the breeze off the mediterranean, driftwood, rocks covered with seaweed and the smell of old leather suitcases." and "a field of untouched new fallen snow, hand knit woolen mittens covered with frost, a hint of frozen forest & sleeping earth.", you can really feel the warm breezes and the chill in the air. i think that at the beach, 1966 might be my next perfume purchase - "you walk into the surf as the waves break on the shore and, bending down to touch the surf, you notice the smell of your warm skin and of the salt water that seems so cold by comparison. it has just the faintest hint of watermelon rind…"
