ode to vivian.
these photos are from negatives purchased at an auction house that acquired them from a storage locker sold off due to delinquent payments. the medium format negatives, over 40,000, were taken in the 1950s - 1970s by vivian maier, a street photographer in chicago.
the images were purchased by john maloof who is doing his best to catalog/archive the work of maier who recently passed away in obscurity. 10-15,000 of the negatives were still in rolls, undeveloped from the 1960's-1970's and there are still about 600 rolls yet to develop.
he googled her about a year after purchasing the negatives only to find her obituary placed the day before his search. she passed away only a couple of days before the inquiry on her.
amazing photographs. amazing story.
